CONTEMPORARY FINE ART

My name is Abdiel Hernandez.  I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1967.  I migrated with my mother and sister to the United States in November of 1969, leaving my father behind to pay his dues to the Castro regime in return for our chance at the American dream.  He later joined us in New York in March of 1970.

I have been an artist as far back as I can remember. Anything I could draw with became my instrument of creativity. Throughout my early school years, I found myself drawing or being creative no matter what subject the rest of the class was reviewing. By today's standards, I would have certainly been diagnosed with some form of attention deficit disorder.

In 1989, I was accepted into the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and began honing my skills as an artist. It wasn't long before my work began gaining recognition by way of student gallery exhibitions and commissioned work. Graduating at the top of my class in 1991, I set out to achieve my artistic goals. I spent many years working for advertising agencies as an Art Director and took on freelance jobs on a regular basis.

After seven years of working as a commercial artist, I needed something more. Art was not fun anymore because everything I produced had to be applied commercially. I returned to school, in 1996, and earned a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communications from Trinity International University in Miami, FL. After graduating, I quickly found work at Univision Television Network and began learning the ropes in TV production. I had the opportunity to travel to other countries and work both in entertainment and hard news.

I made a drastic change in 2006 and moved to Southwest Florida to begin my own venture alongside my wife.

As the dust finally settled, I found myself needing to create just for the sake of creating with neither clients to please, nor creative directors breathing down my neck, just me and a blank canvas. I have come full circle and loving every minute of it.  My only hope is that my work will inspire someone, in some form or another, in a positive way.
